Archeological evidence said that humans had a way of managing their waste even before landfills and incinerators were developed. In many archeological sites, dumping pits were discovered where early people were believed to throw in their waste. In the course of history, waste regulations were enacted. This suggests that waste management is not a modern principle but in fact a natural response to existence.

Humans naturally know what to do with their waste as evidenced by the instituted waste management systems in the pre-modern and modern forms. However, along with global industrialization and population explosion, waste production blew out of proportion, endangering the environment and threatening humans and other living things. With the environmental issues raised here and there, there seems to be a need to remind humans of the importance of waste management.

Education and awareness campaigns play a great part here. Not all people after all are aware that the one piece of waste material they are sending to landfills or incinerators constitutes a greater threat to the environment. Presently, calls to recycle and waste reduction are widely active. And various projects and campaigns are launched everyday, adding more noise to the earlier advocacies on proper waste management.

The good news is that a good number of the population is increasingly becoming aware of the importance of waste management and is getting involved. However, more need to be tapped. There are still who remain passive. This segment of the population probably knows that proper waste management benefits the Earth and consequently everyone and everything living in it. But only vaguely. The finer and more intricate details are probably not known to them.

Waste does a lot of things. When brought to the landfills, they emit greenhouse gas in the form of methane. Although methane can be used to make energy, it is generally hazardous to health. Wastes buried in landfills also tend to leach chemicals that can contaminate groundwater. Wastes can be incinerated, though. The problem with incinerators, however, is that they also produce greenhouse gas and other forms of toxin such as dioxin. Dioxin is found to cause cancer. Whether waste is brought to a landfill or incinerator, it seems like it is a potential source of pollution and threat to health.

Although indirectly, waste causes resource depletion. This is due to the common buying pattern: buy, throw, and then buy again. As the waste piles up high, the demand for more products also rises, almost exhausting the natural resources. This has a spiral effect, mainly involving threats to biodiversity, deforestation, pollution, and other environmental problems.

Waste management can be part of the solution in two ways: one is through waste reduction, and two through recycling. Consistent waste reduction and recycling activities mean there will be less waste materials to be sent to landfills and incinerators. As such, the emission of greenhouse gas and other forms of pollutant will be reduced by a large percentage. Reusing and recycling of used items will also result in less production of new products. And this helps in the conservation of natural resources.

There is a great need in understanding the importance of waste management because unless it is acknowledged by all people, waste management efforts will not progress to further heights.

The first step to understanding who we are, and what we want, is to separate our ‘wants’ and ‘needs’ by determining what our beliefs are. Once we explore this then we can determine our level of integrity.

There are no wrong answers. Many people are surprised to learn that money and career choice has little impact on their motivation.

Middle School Classroom Management Behavior Action Plan

One of the most difficult skills to master as a teacher is classroom management. Unfortunately, if you can not master this skill you are not going to survive as a teacher, especially as a middle school teacher.

However, when the school year starts, many first-year middle school teachers are pleasantly surprised. All through their teacher training they were told how difficult classroom management at the middle school level can be and how important it is to have effective classroom management skills in order to be a successful teacher.

Yet, during the first days of school there doesn’t seem to be much of a problem’students seem fairly attentive, no one is really talking or passing notes, there certainly hasn’t been anyone talking back or any fights during the first few days’but then things start to change.

You see, those first few days are the honeymoon period’students are nervous and many are a little scared so they sit back and wait. However, by the end of the first week of school, or certainly by the second week of school, middle school students start to feel more comfortable, they start to test the teacher’s limits and classroom management becomes more and more difficult.

It is at this point that many teachers start to panic and immediately resort to various reward/punishment systems, or as Alfie Kohn refers to them'”carrot and stick” systems.

Unfortunately, these elaborate systems are a mistake. They provide only temporary solutions to an ongoing problem. Students who respond to the rewards begin to do their work and behave ONLY if a reward is involved, while at the same time many students who thrive on negative attention actually begin to seek out the punishment.

The better plan is the “proactive approach” to classroom management. The proactive approach is based on the premise that the best classroom management plan is a strong instructional plan’that the key to middle school classroom management is to keep all of your students actively involved in all of your lessons.

Unfortunately, there are times when teachers are still forced to REact. There are times when the teacher has used every proactive trick in the book and still a student does something that requires the teacher to react.

HOWEVER, just because a teacher must react to a situation does mean the teacher must punish the student. The teacher must still save punishment as a last resort only!

So, what’s a teacher to do?

Well here’s an idea…create a “behavior action plan”. Better yet, have the student create the “behavior action plan”.

The key to changing inappropriate student behavior is to have the *student* take responsibility for his actions. First, the student must identify the inappropriate behavior, and then determine why it is inappropriate, and finally, how he plans to stop the inappropriate behavior.

All the teacher needs to do is have the student complete a “behavior action plan”. The plan calls for the student to complete the following three statements:

1. I am writing this plan because I…

2. This behavior was not appropriate because…

3. To prevent this from happening again, I plan to…

Then, at the bottom of the handout make sure to have the student sign his or her name. By signing their name the student is making a promise to follow through with their plan.

In the end, this classroom management approach is significantly better than simply punishing the student for the misbehavior. This classroom management approach has long-term results.

What You Can Expect From An Anger Management Class

An anger problem can be a huge deterrent in your life. It affects every single part of every single thing you do. It affects your relationships with your children, your spouse and your friends. It can cause huge strife in the workplace if people are afraid that you can’t control your anger.

Taking an anger management class is in your best interest if you want to manage anger and stop letting anger control your life. Sure, anger does have its place but it should not be on a daily basis. There are ways to avoid confrontations with other people that may land you in the court system.

The worst case scenario regarding an anger management class is that you did something and are now within the long arm of the law’s reach. It may be limited to road rage, but road rage can quickly escalate into dangerous territory. What can you expect from your class? Well, you can expect to meet other people who are in the same situation. They need to learn to manage anger just as you do.

Classes will generally start off simply. The therapist will identify the level of anger you feel. Is it just irritation at life or does it escalates into a rage that blinds you to reason? Step two is to identify the triggers that spark the anger that lies within. Are you ignoring an issue in your life that is bothering you? That issue could be triggering your aggression towards other people.

There are alternate methods of dealing with anger and you will discover these in your anger management class. Many counselors advise deep breathing and meditation. You can also take stock of the situation and look at it with humorous attitude.

If your coworker makes you angry and you think he or she is bear, then it may help to imagine him or her as an actual bear, such as that one that steals picnic baskets. Do whatever you can to help diffuse your anger and gain control again.
